After sitting vacant for decades, the Hellmann Lumber Mill was purchased by a community group in an effort to help revitalize the MLK corridor in Covington, KY. Hellmann Lumber has been a fixture in Covington and all of Northern Kentucky since the turn of the century, providing much of the building materials for the area. The 130-year old, 13,800 square foot mill was adapted into a placemaking hub with flexible community space, 6 artist studios, and the administrative offices of the Center for Great Neighborhoods. Our design goal was to preserve as much of the historic building as possible.  Significant elements of the original lumber mill were left untouched to allow the history of the building to shine through the modern re-use. The original mechanical systems, belts, and pulleys are featured alongside the heavy timber framing.
